FAQ

Why is the Select Bearings product a meaningful contributor to clean water?

  • Given the poor MTBF (mean time between failure) of the India Mark II handle bearings, this translates into numerous repairs over the lifespan of the hand pump. Repair technicians can be difficult to obtain in remote rural locations, thus pump downtime can be extensive. Also, if neglected long enough, bearing failures can cause collateral damage to other pump components, making repairs even more costly. Select Bearings significantly reduces the frequency of hand pump repairs due to handle bearing failures.

Do hand pumps need to be modified in order to install Select Bearings?

  • Select Bearings are designed to be installed in India Mark II hand pumps, without any modification to the hand pump itself.

What is the pricing of Select Bearings?

  • We are committed to bringing Select Bearings to market at prices competitive with factory installed bearings and other competing after market bearings. While we believe Select Bearings provide a much better value, i.e. 3x lifespan, we find that many installers simply go with the lowest price replacement bearings available. For that reason, we are willing to sell Select Bearings at lower margins in order for this superior product to be more widely adopted. For pricing details, please contact us via the contact form.

What experience do I need to install Select Bearings?

  • Any technician who has installed replacement handle bearings before will be able to install Select Bearings. The installation time is nearly identical.

When should I install Select Bearings?

  • Ideally, all new India Mark II hand pumps should replace their factory handle bearings with Select Bearings at time of initial installation. This will greatly reduce the frequency of repairs due to handle bearing failures in the future.
  • A symptom of handle bearing failure is the distance the handle swings laterally. As bearings fail, the lateral movement of the handle becomes greater. Replace the bearings as soon as possible to prevent damage to other pump components.
